Device Drivers - what are they?
A device driver
is a computer program that controls
the flow of information to/from an attached piece
of hardware - like a CD- ROM, printer, monitor, keyboard,
mouse, etc. So, when you press a letter on your keyboard
the keyboard sends an electronic signal to the computer.
The computer, which may be merrily running a program
(like your browser) is sent a signal - called an interrupt -
and stops what it is doing and responds to the interrupt as
it temporarily puts on hold what it was doing . The computer
then executes the keyboard driver code and, for example, puts
the letter you just typed into an input field on your web browser.
The computer thus finishes your typed request and then resumes
what it was doing. It should be pointed out that driver code is
usually written by the hardware makers. This , of course, may
lead to problems ( like the Blue Screen of Death - BSOD) as
the third party code may have "bugs" in it. In fact, I think, that
a good majority of BSOD problems are caused by faulty driver
software. So if you suspect a bad driver you can get the lastest
